Angel Network Open Session this Thursday. Investors and entrepreneurs invited.

Please plan to join us for a Panel Discussion entitled Investing in Entrepreneurial Ventures.  A panel comprised of UCAN members will address the following questions:

1.  What is angel investing and how does it fit in the world of entrepreneurial finance?

2.  What is UCAN and how does it work?

3.  What kinds of companies are good candidates for UCANinvestments?

4.  What is the value of UCAN to investors, and how do I get involved?

When:             Thursday, January 8, 2009

Time:              Panel Discussion from 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Light reception to follow 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

A few good podcasts you may not yet be listening to (with Audio)

Future Tense host Jon Gordon recently asked for favorite podcasts via a Twitter request .  I dropped in a vote for my favorite long form audio podcast Radio Lab .  It is the smartest podcast I've ever found and I make sure to catch every episode. Radio Lab covers science in an approachable, meaningful way that celebrates discovery and the people who are doing the hard work in modern science. Hosts Robert Krulwich and Jad Abumrad are giddy in their presentations and their love for science shows in every second of the show. Bravo to them and thanks to Jon Gordon for including my comments.

Below is a link to the Future Tense podcast which includes my recommendation. I'd also use this time to recommend you add Future Tense to your iTunes list as well.  Every weekday Future Tense shines three minutes of light on some area of technology that you quite probably have overlooked. The show airs on many public radio stations, so every edition is broadcast quality and of the highest production value. Take a listen.

This Future Tense episode features a few words from yours truly.

Crazy Christmas Gifts?

I received this over the Christmas Holiday, but it was actually described as a belated Birthday present... from my Mother.  I have tried to figure out what caused my mother to get this for me. It's a non-sequitur that somehow seems to have meaning.

It's not quite crazy, because it is something I might buy.

It is crazy because I still can't quite figure my mother buying it for me.

This statue is the kind of thing that if I'd bought it and put it on my desk as a teenager, she'd have shaken her head in disbelief.  If it were sitting on a shelf in a store, I'd have thought it to be invisible to her as she was actually looking for a stuffed bear in overalls.  Thanks mom, both for thinking of me and about me. I'm glad we can still connect.

The South didn't get a bailout — we got busy

"When the textile industry went down in the South and we were accused of being behind the times, we didn't ask for a bailout — we just had to reinvent ourselves,"

Breakthrough Skin Care Line Changes Lives for Bus Mechanics -- Really?

Is it cheeky to say that this press release cracks me up? Congratulations to Bill Stubbs for allowing his name to be used to promote a skin care product.  This must entail an incredible amount of ribbing from co-workers.

CHARLESTON, S.C., -- Life can be painful and unsightly for the men who work fixing the buses for school children in Florence, South Carolina. Bleeding, cracked, dry hands have actually forced these men to be laid off from work. These rough and tough guys, employed by the Dept. of Transportation, are now talking about a beauty hand creme that has made it possible to return to work, enjoy their jobs and stop the pain.

According to Jenny Lynn Fogle, Owner of Palmetto Specialty Products in Columbia, S.C., who works closely with these men, "They have cracked-open hands, bleeding, chapped to the point they can't even hold a tool their hands are so messed up."

Bill Stubbs, a 30 year bus mechanic from Florence, says, "As a mechanic, you would think that all that oil and grease on your hands is going to keep them smooth, but it doesn't. Our hands are sore and cracked. If it gets real bad, we miss work."

Fogle worked with Charleston, S.C. based skin care company, L'Athene, whose founders are registered nurses and skin care specialists. Together they developed a protocol for bus shop mechanics in South Carolina, to use products for their hands, on a trial basis.

"It worked and it worked quickly," said Fogle. "I was so surprised, and the men were amazed. You could see a significant difference in their hands within three days."

Created by two nurses who worked at Johns Hopkins with burn patients, L'Athene started as an anti-aging skincare line and has unexpectedly found its way to create healthy hands for bus mechanics and health care professionals who frequently handwash. These nurses are nourishing lives in a whole new way.

Now, these mechanics are back to work thanks to the rapid treatment from L'Athene.

Used in numerous hospitals, high-end spas and several department stores, L'Athene's all-natural formulations are power-packed with vitamins, minerals, proteins and fatty acids for extraordinary results. Crafted for purity from start to finish, without man-made chemicals, resulting in healthy, radiant, beautiful skin for all skin types, including aging and challenged skin.
