I can't imagine using the word obsequies (funeral rites) in a sentence. It sounds too much like obsequious (fawning or servile.) It feels wrong to have those two words with incompatible meanings sound so similar. I suspect, but have not bothered to confirm that they share the latin root for duty obsequim. It seems that much of the internet shares this bit of homonymophobia. If writing on the internet you are 2.5 times more likely to use the word obsequious than obsequies. Results via Googlefight .

THEY TOLD BUSH THAT 2 BRAZILIAN SOLDIERS WERE KILLED IN IRAQ . TO EVERYONE'S SURPRISE, ALL THE COLOR DRAINED FROM BUSH'S FACE. THEN HE COLLAPSED ONTO HIS DESK, HEAD IN HIS HANDS, VISIBLY SHAKEN,ALMOST IN TEARS. FINALLY HE COMPOSED HIMSELF AND ASKED, 'JUST HOW MANY IS A BRAZILIAN?' |
